( Sheila's Top Ten )
- The most important tip I can give you is to draw and paint things that you love. I remember in university art class having to draw nudes and paint still life over and over and over again and again and again. I vowed never to draw a nude or paint a still life again unless someone agreed to pay me a fortune for doing so.
- Remember to use the best equipment and tools that you can afford. You will have greater success, happiness and you will keep your sanity longer! Although I am sure that there are those who know me that question the last one.
- Always experiment with new mediums and techniques. It will enhance your skill level and give you inspiration to pick up that pencil or brush! It will also give you a reason if you need one to go to the local art supply store and spend money that you probably don't have.
- Join an Art Guild in your area. If you cannot join a guild log onto wet canvas. It is a great forum for artists! Remember not to spend all of your time being a social butterfly, GET TO WORK!
- Remember to use your family and friends to help market you. They will love to brag to all who will listen about this great artist that they know and in some cases better yet they are related to.
- Volunteer to teach an art class at a school. The kids really enjoy having you there and you really enjoy hearing what a wonderful artist you are.
- You could be the next ninja turtle but no one is going to know if you don't get your name out there. When someone asks you what you do tell them you are an ARTIST and have a business card ready to give them.
- Never wash you paint apron, it is bad luck!
- Remember, you can teach an old artist new tricks! Unless of course they are really famous. If they are, let them teach you the tricks.
- Everyone is a critic. Probably, one of the most difficult things about being an artist is you are always putting yourself out there and are open to just about anything being said. Always remember you are an artist and they are probably not.
